Who Qualifies For Assistance?

Who qualifies for the elderly waiver in Mississippi? Qualifications vary by waiver.

To qualify for The Independent Living Waiver you must be at least 16 years old. You must have a severe orthopedic or neurological deficit; meet nursing home level of care; be medically stable; and be able to communicate needs.

To qualify for The Elderly and Disabled Waiver the following criteria must be met: must be twenty-one (21) years of age or older; Participant must require nursing facility level of care as determined by a standardized comprehensive preadmission screening tool. Participant Nursing Facility level of care must be certified by a physician and recertified every twelve (12) months at a minimum; AND Participant must be in one of the following Categories of Eligibility (COE): SSI, or An aged, blind, or disabled individual.

How Do You Select A Provider?

Who will provide my services? Provider qualifications vary by wavier.

The The Elderly and Disabled / E&D Waiver-Services are provided by qualified agencies. Family members can be paid to provide personal care services if they are employed by an agency that offers the services, meet the qualification and training requirements, and they are not legally responsible for the beneficiary.

The Independent Living IL waiver- The participant chooses the individual who will provide PCA services. Personal care services may be furnished by members of the participant's family provided that they are not legally responsible for the waiver participant. Therefore, payment will not be made for services furnished by the parent (step-parent) of a minor child or the participant's spouse. Family members who provide personal care services must meet the same standards as providers who are unrelated to the participant. There must be adequate justification for the relative to function as the Personal Care Attendant, e.g., lack of qualified attendants in remote areas.

The Assisted Living / (A/L) Waiver Services are provided by a qualified, licensed personal care home/assisted living residential facility chosen by the beneficiary.

  • The Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services offers other programs. They can be contacted at 800-443-1000.
  • Five slots are set aside for traumatic brain injury/assisted living facility. Specific medical eligibility requirements for these slots. Beneficiary must have a diagnosis of an acquired traumatic brain injury; must have completed acute rehabilitation treatment; must be in a crisis/high stress environment with behavioral needs which place the beneficiary at high risk for institutionalization; documentation as to why the services could not be provided inside the borders of Mississippi.
